National non-profit travel industry organization U.S. Travel Association released results of its Travel Trends Index. The study measures the current direction and pace of travel and forecasts the future direction of travel over the next several months.
The most recent Travel Trends Index indicates overall growth for the travel industry in 2016, but at a slow rate. International travel is slow partially due to the strong U.S. dollar. Domestic leisure travel is currently stronger than domestic business travel.
“This month’s Travel Trends Index proves yet again that American leisure travelers, who account for 60 percent of travel spending in the U.S., will likely continue their role as engines of growth for the U.S. travel industry in 2016,” said David Huether, senior vice president for research, U.S. Travel Association.
The Travel Trends Index predicts moderate travel, both international and domestic, through the rest of 2016 with a rate growth of about 1.5 percent through the fall.
The U.S. Travel Association uses search and booking data collected from ADARA and nSight; passenger data from Airlines for America; airline booking data from Airlines Reporting Corporation; and hotel room data from STR.
