Traveling solo is all the rage thanks to the flexibility of schedules and the relaxed nature of making uncomplicated plans. No matter how often you travel alone, there is the potential to get a bit lonely, and some may not always feel safe when navigating far-away lands by themselves. Enter Companion, a new mobile app that targets solo travelers and claims it will help you feel safer on your next solo journey.

Rather than checking in with loved ones when traveling across the globe, the app allows your friends and family to keep track of you as you connect flights and hop from city to international city.

Available for iOS and Android devices, the app connects you with chosen contacts designated as ‘companions’ and they will receive an alert if you find yourself in a dangerous or unplanned situation. The app will sporadically prompt the user to confirm their safety status, at which point the user will need to confirm or else the companion will receive an alert notice. The app can also detect whether you are walking or jogging, thus informing your companions of the potential danger of your situation.

Traveling aside, the app can also be used daily if you find yourself walking down a dark, empty street late at night. You may not be able to afford a 24/7 security guard, but with Companion you can rest assured someone is looking out for your safety.
