Ridesharing company Uber is continuing its push into other types of transportation with its latest venture in Paris. Through a collaboration with Cityscoot, Uber will provide access to rentable scooters around the French capital.
Mopeds and motorbikes are more prevalent in Europe than in the United States, so Uber chose Paris to kick off its collaboration with Cityscoot to gauge demand and popularity of the service. By allowing and encouraging residents to rent scooters instead of buying their own, the city will see decreased motor traffic and more environmentally friendly methods of transit.
To reserve a moto, riders can access the Uber mobile app just as they would do when reserving a ride in a car. The app will display a map to show the locations of the 4,000 scooters across the city, and users can simply tap the Cityscoot they would like to rent, receive a PIN code and use the code to unlock the scooter’s seat, where drivers will find a helmet and reflective safety vests for nighttime riding. Scooters are available to rent for 32 cents per minute.
Moped novices can sign up for a training course run by Uber. This addition of more scooters under the Uber umbrella makes Paris the world’s top city for shared mobility options.
