Under $100: Chengdu

Chengdu is the capital of southwestern China’s Sichuan province. It is one of the most popular travel destinations in China because of its history, well-preserved tradition, unique local folks and arts, pleasant weather and developed tourism industry. Here’s how to see the city while sticking to a budget.

Start your day at Origins Coffee Company. They have a good cup of coffee, delicious pastries and great breakfast sandwiches. The atmosphere here is relaxed, making it a great place to enjoy your wake-up coffee. Prices range $4–12.

After breakfast, get some education at Sichuan Museum. It is free to enter and the rooms are full of art, pottery, ceramics and artifacts from most of the dynasties discovered in the province of Sichuan. Remember your passport or another form of ID for your free ticket.

For lunch head to Zhangjiagang for a wide variety of food carts. The carts are lined on both sides of the street. You can get dumplings, fried noodles and more. All of the foods will be priced less than $5.

Stroll through Huan Huaxi Park, located on the outskirts of the city, after lunch. The park has many beautiful fishponds, shaded stone paths and photo-worthy statues. There is also a bird viewing area where you can watch storks, geese and ducks of all varieties.

Chenmapo Beancurd is highly recommended for dinner. They invented mapo tofu more than 100 years ago. Here you can get two drinks, dishes and sides for around $11.

At night the city lights up and puts on glamour displays, with many options of what to do, from having a beer at a nightclub to the Sichuan Opera at the teahouse.
