Located on the northern end of Wisconsin’s Door Peninsula, Door County is a quaint escape for travelers looking for somewhere to relax in the summertime. Here’s how to spend the day wisely.
The area is home to a large Scandinavian population, making Al Johnson’s the perfect place for brunch. The restaurant and butik is an authentic, family-owned Swedish restaurant, complete with waitresses dressed in dirndls and housed in a traditional cabin made of logs imported from Norway. They have a large menu, but you can’t go wrong with their signature meatballs and pancakes topped with lingonberry jam.

Door County is a great destination for outdoor enthusiasts with five state parks and miles and miles of bike trails. Peninsula State Park is the largest in the area, offering hiking, fishing, swimming, a VITA course and a well-reviewed golf course that is a steal at only $39 for green fees. The nearby Washington Island Beach, also a part of the park, offers a variety of water activities like kayaking. Washington Island is about a mile from the shore, and is nice place to do some exploring.

Rustic places like Door County are prime locations for craft breweries and wineries. Make a stop at Orchard Country Winery & Market for a tour and tasting of their family-made wine and cherries. The market has a large variety of cherry products available as well, which are perfect for thoughtful, local souvenirs.

Dinner in Door County is best experienced as a classic fish boil, a Great Lakes tradition brought over by Scandinavian immigrants, formerly to feed crowds of lumberjacks and fisherman but now a popular tourist attraction. Lots of local establishments do their own fish boil, but Rowley’s Bay Resort might have the best, with their own historic Rowley telling the story of Door County while the chef prepares your feast.

If you’ve ever attempted to work on the go — not necessarily for a business trip, but just because your job offers the flexibility of remote working — you may have struggled with working from your hotel room.
