Under $100 / Africa

The cosmopolitan hub of East Africa is lively and full of contrasts. It is one of the most exotically beautiful destinations in the world. Millions of tourists fly in each year to experience the scenery, weather and culture of the city. From tall skyscrapers, bustling streets and a voracious nightlife, you may need to extend your travels here a few extra days.

Begin your day at the Nairobi Java House, the top choice for café in the city. The coffeehouse is rapidly turning into a major brand, with its logo on t-shirts all over the world. The java house has some of the best coffee in Kenya, along with cakes and other sweet treats. There are a number of branches of the Java House coffee shops across Nairobi. Enjoy a locally grown coffee with a breakfast wrap with sliced avocado, peppers, sour cream and salsa for $5.40, or brioche French toast for $4.40.

See the interesting animals that inhabit the Nairobi Safari Walk, a conservation-based recreational facility. This is a true sample of what wildlife in Kenya has to offer by seeing some of the rarest animals on the planet like the white rhino, the bonogo and even the albino zebra, as well as big cats and primates. The Safari Walk is home to some 150 species of local trees. Adults can enter the park for $25 and children $15.

Stop by for a bite to eat at Le Palanka, African cuisine at its best. The ambiance, food and service are exceptional.

The Masaai Market is held each day, except for Mondays, in a different place in Nairobi. The culture here is perhaps the most renowned of Kenya’s ethnicity. The bustling, colorful and loud experience is truly the place to pick up some African pieces to take home, as there is nowhere better than the open-air markets. Local artisans lay out their handmade work from candle holders to wall hangings, sandals, jewelry, clothing, utensils and much more.

Don’t forget to take an African safari tour. Choose from the many pre-planned excursions to one tailored to suit your budget, while still providing an adventure of a lifetime. Prices vary, depending on location and how long you want your safari to last.

For those meat-eaters, you must have dinner at the Carnivore Restaurant on Lang’ata Road, one of Kenya’s revered open-air restaurants. Dining here is an experience to remember. Choose your game meat and enjoy the ambiance. Perhaps you’re in the mood for crocodile or ostrich or perhaps zebra — this restaurant has it all. Indulge in local and international beers while you’re chowing down on the local meats.

End the night at Brew Bistro, one of the country’s leading mini-brewers. It offers an assortment of lagers, stout and ale topped with a wonderful atmosphere. Try Kenya’s signature brands of Tusker and Pilsner and take a sip on the wild side.
