Sisimiut is a quaint little city in the northern most region of Greenland, making it the perfect place to catch the Northern Lights. If you find yourself spending a day here it’s fairly easy to take a peek around without breaking $100.
The city is walkable, so don’t bother wasting money on transit. The Sisimiut Museum should be the first stop on your tour. Entrance is less than $5 and the displays will give you great insight into the area’s history. It also has a great archeological exhibit to explore.
For an early lunch, stop in at Nasaasaaq where you might be lucky enough to sample one of their regularly changing buffets. The restaurant serves up some fantastic fish dishes, especially the salmon, so give it a bite if you can. A meal here should cost roughly $20.
Dog sledding is a big deal in Sisimiut and you’ll find many locals who participate in the sport. After lunch have a walk around and visit with some of the teams. You’ll get up close with professional sled dogs and their trainers and maybe learn a few tricks of the trade. This should be free, so don’t go around paying for any tours.
Spend the rest of the afternoon walking around town and mingling with the locals. There are some great fishing spots around town, if you’d like to give that a try.
For dinner, stop in to Café Sisimiut for a decent, authentic meal with some locals. Dinner should run you no more than $20 per plate.
