Many tourists overlook Mexico’s second city, but it’s a fascinating place. Here’s how you can see the best of Guadalajara in one day.
Get a good breakfast in at Los Mitotes de Maria in Tlaquepaque, with traditional dishes like chilaquiles on the menu alongside a coffee and cinnamon mixture known as café de olla ($6). Take a stroll around the Tlaquepaque market, and stop in at some of the boutiques that line the colonial streets.
Afterwards go to the Instituto Cultural Cabanas (entrance $3.50) in the center of the city, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that houses mural paintings by Orozco among other great works. Have lunch in the traditional surroundings of San Pascual Bailon, and top it off with a traditional Guadalajara flan known as jericalla ($8).
Visit Guadalajara Cathedral and the Basilica de Zapopan before heading back to your hostel to freshen up. Afterwards, head out for sunset beers on the terrace at Cerveceria Chapultepec (beers $1), stop in at El Parian to see the mariachis (beers $1.50; song $2.50) and then grab some tacos at Tacos Ocampo ($4).
If you want to dance, grab a taxi ($4) to Pare de Sufrir, a mezcaleria where DJs spin to the early hours.
