Lithuania’s historic capital city goes big for the holidays with an extensive list of activities, events and festivities in store. This holiday season, Vilnius also celebrates its 30th anniversary as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
On Nov. 29, the city kicks off the season with the unveiling of its iconic Christmas tree in Vilnius Cathedral Square. Known worldwide for its innovative designs blending sustainability and technology, Vilnius’ Christmas trees use spruce branches to create installations that inspire global decorating trends.
Then, from Nov. 29 to Dec. 29, the city opens its Christmas Market, located next to the tree. Enjoy the holiday spirit with the smells and tastes of homemade food and drinks. You can also buy locally made gifts. Try Lithuanian Christmas Eve cookies — poppy seed-studded dough bites typically served with poppy seed milk or cranberry drink.
Don’t miss a session on the rink between Nov. 30 and Jan. 26. This year, Vilnius Ice Skating Rink sits in a new location, the heart of the Old Town at Town Hall Square. The rink will include more than 400 square meters of open-air skating space, as well as hot drinks and culinary treats.
Fancy a holiday run? On Dec. 7, take part in the Vilnius Christmas Run, a race now in its 49th year. Dress up in your favorite holiday costume, whether it’s Santa Claus or a snowman, and race through the streets of Vilnius.
In the two weekends leading up to Christmas, the historic Lukiškės Prison complex, now a vibrant artistic hub, turns into a gastro market with unique and classic Christmas dishes on sale. And for some last-minute Christmas shopping, Loftas Uptown Christmas Market (Dec. 20–22) brings together local creators in fashion, art, drinks and other Lithuanian producers for a lively market.

Insta FeedAre You Ready for the Final Switch to Real ID?
Yesterday, TSA began enforcing new identification guidelines, a change that’s been a long-time coming. Now, travelers must show a REAL ID-compliant, state-issued ID in order to fly on domestic flights, in lieu of a non-compliant driver’s license (some other forms of identification, such as passports, will still be acceptable).
