England is worth visiting for several reasons, but for literature lovers, the possibilities, discoveries and experiences are endless. VisitEngland is celebrating its rich literary history, dubbing 2017 the “Year of Literary Heroes,” commemorating the likes of Jane Austen, Shakespeare, Charles Dickens and J.K. Rowling.

The theme, announced at the ExploreGB trade show in Brighton, marks the 200th anniversary of Jane Austen’s death with a series of events, tours and exhibitions in southern England throughout the year.

Tour Austen’s burial place and her home in Chawton, where she penned her greatest works including Pride and Prejudice, Emma and Sense and Sensibility. Vying with Austen for top spot among famous literary heroes is J.K. Rowling, and 2017 marks the 20th anniversary of the publication of Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. VisitEngland is celebrating with a Harry Potter exhibition at the British Library running Oct. 20, 2017–Feb. 28, 2018. A film concert series will take place this month in locations throughout the United Kingdom.

Mystery fans can partake in the commemoration of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s 125th anniversary of the publication of the first Sherlock Holmes story. Visit the famous detective’s home on Baker Street, and enjoy a pub tour based on the BBD series, Holmes.
