Trends / Unique Itineraries & Tours

It seems most Americans are likely aware of the fable surrounding the country’s 39th president: A lowly peanut farmer from Georgia ascended to the presidency after serving in the state legislature and as governor. Before taking office, he sold his beloved peanut farm to avoid any potential conflicts of interest. Interested travelers can still visit it, since designated the Jimmy Carter National Historic Site and part of the national park system.

The site is located in Plains, Georgia, open 362 days out of the year, only closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day.

The site’s website suggests starting a visit at Plains High School, where the park’s visitor center and museum can be found. The visitor center and museum are open 9 a.m.–5 p.m. daily. From there, guests can visit the train depot museum and the Carter boyhood farm. Tours of the farm are offered at 11:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. Guests cannot visit the Carter private residence.

The entire town is considered part of the historic site and is worth exploring.
