March 20 is International Day of Happiness and, in honor of the day, WalletHub, the personal-finance website, released a report on 2022’s Happiest Cities in America. Most Americans experienced a spike in stress due to COVID-19, so hopefully this report will help spark joy and lower stress.
In order to determine the happiest cities, WalletHub compared more than 180 of the largest U.S. cities across 30 key indicators of happiness. Location can play a hand in the brightness or gloominess of the days. Researchers studied the science of happiness, finding its key factors include a positive mental state, healthy body and strong social connections. The data ranges from depression rate to income growth to average leisure time spent per day.
The Top 5 Happiest Cities in America include:
- Fremont, California
- Columbia, Maryland
- San Francisco, California
- San Jose, California
- Irvine, California
The study also discovered Pearl City, Hawai’i, has the lowest depression rate with its rate 2.3 times lower than in Huntington, West Virginia, the city with the highest depression rate. Fremont, California, has the lowest separation and divorce rate and is 4.4 times lower than in Cleveland, which has the highest.
The study found South Burlington, Vermont, has the lowest share of adults sleeping less than seven hours per night. In terms of transportation, Cheyenne, Wyoming, has the lowest average commute time, whereas New York has the highest.
