What to Expect When Donating Hair

Tips / Other

When donating hair to a great cause, there are still a few things you should know.

First, choose an affiliation to donate to. Between Wigs for Kids, Locks for Love and BeYoutiful Foundation, there are a few worthy options. Just be sure to read through the instructions, how many inches are required and the location to send hair — and the shipping method. Do you have to pay for shipping? Will they send a pre-labeled envelope? Check the FAQs on the site and make some plans.

Second, know how much you are donating. A lot of affiliations take 10–12 inches, while others accept a minimum of 14 — make sure you are ready for the sheer amount of hair that actually is. When measuring your own hair, give yourself an inch or two difference just to be prepared — so many inches can be a shock to the system, so be ready.

Third, have a trusted friend, family member or stylist make the cut. Set your hair in several ponytails meeting the length requirement, not just one. One ponytail will make for a blunt, uneven cut and the hair in the back will be too short.

All in all, make sure this is something you’re 100 percent, completely positive about. ItA’s a great cause and hair grows, but slowly.
