It’s true, it’s what lies on the inside that counts, and nothing holds truer than when it comes to books. But it sure helps when you’re perusing shelves for your next read and you happen to be within a beautiful bookstore while you’re at it. In fact, there are some pretty stunning bookstores around the world that go above your typical local shop.
If you find yourself in one of these cities, don’t miss the chance to pop into one of these stores and find your next great book (enjoying the photogenic store, of course).
So, what are the most beautiful bookshops in the world?
The Last Bookstore in Los Angeles comes out on top, where marble pillars, vaulted ceilings and artfully arranged books are a book lover’s dream come true. The store also features a tunnel created by stacked books and an oval-shaped cutout, both photogenic spots.
Shakespeare and Company in Paris, France, is also a hit, and for good reason. The store stands on the Seine across from Notre Dame Cathedral and sells English-language books within its cozy, winding rooms. Search for vintage books as you meander through a labyrinth of shelves. And did you know this store allows aspiring writers and artists to live on-site in exchange for working at the store?
Livraria Lello in Porto, Portugal, also wows patrons thanks to its Neo-Gothic façade and ornate interior. Take in the stained-glass ceilings, opulent woodwork and red staircase. It’s truly a sight to behold.
Other must-visit bookshops worth a trip and photo are Powell’s in Portland, Oregon; Book and Bed in Tokyo, Japan; Libreria Acqua Alta in Venice, Italy; Daunt Books in London, England; El Ateneo Grand Splendid in Buenos Aires, Argentina; Cărturești Carusel in Bucharest, Romania; and Atlantis Books in Santorini, Greece.
