You are presumably not the kind of traveler that returns to the same destination year-in, year-out. If you do fall into that category, even better, because the following will hopefully go some way to broadening your horizons.
Travel start-up Whimsy encourages exploration by proposing a curated selection of more exotic locations to its users, without the premium prices that you may expect. As well as opening your eyes to less-visited destinations (hands up if you’ve been to Lake Bunyoni, Uganda!), Whimsy uses an algorithm which matches cheap flights with favorable weather patterns, so you don’t end up in the Caribbean during hurricane season.
As founder Adriano Galardi explains, “People tend to stick to what they know when it comes to travel or go to the popular destinations of the moment. We’re hoping to draw them away from that.”
Featured destinations at the time of writing included Myanmar, Oman and Vietnam, which goes to show that the company is sticking to its promise of encouraging people to visit less popular locations. The user experience is painless and although there is currently only a photo to entice you to book your trip, Galardi plans to introduce an editorial section to the site. Here users will be able to share their experiences and hopefully attract other people to follow the road less traveled.
Although the service is currently still in beta mode, you can sign up for early access on the Whimsy website. Sign up, book a trip and share your story of an adventure to somewhere that your local travel agent may have never even heard of.
