Apart from being one of the most southern regions of the continent, thus hopefully promising warmer weather and sunnier skies, Andalucía has heaps of other treats to offer when the temperatures plummet and the skies become dark. Follow the lead of the birds and head south this winter to Spain´s southern land of wonderment.
Skiing and Snowboarding
The Sierra Nevada mountain range stretches across Southern Spain and features the highest point in the Iberian Peninsula (more than 11,000 feet). With views of the surrounding mountains and olive fields, you won´t believe you´re only a short drive to the beaches of the Mediterranean Sea.
Beaches
Speaking of beaches, it is possible to enjoy the southern coastal beaches during the winter months, and maybe even take a dip in the sea! The beach towns of Málaga, Marbella and Cádiz are some of the more popular stops for beach bums. Even if the air and water are too chilly for a swim, the towns feature endless sea vistas and prime shopping opportunities.
Skiing and surfing aside, the region is worth a visit just because it is there. Andalucía’s personality and differences compared with other regions in Spain are pronounced. The winter is a harsh season in many areas of Europe, but in Southern Spain, Andalusians are rejoicing by celebrating the holy holiday of Christmas while gearing up for one of the world´s best Carnival parties in Cádiz come February.
