Mount Rainier National Park near Seattle receives a significant amount of snowfall each year — so much so its alpine meadows stay covered for a long stretch, so spring and summer happen almost simultaneously and last a few short weeks.
But when that snow does melt, the meadows burst into color with wildflowers, making the already-stunning scenery with the glaciers of Rainier as a centerpiece all the more stunning. Head to the park in July and August for a chance to catch this show at its peak, with daisies, lupines, paintbrushes, heather and more.
The National Park Service website has a handy guide to the best places to go for wildflowers, and what is blooming where. Peak season varies year-to-year based on weather, so it’s best to check the website to figure out the latest.
Photographers and wildflower seekers can simply walk from the parking lot at one of the visitor centers and view wildflowers, or seek more quiet spaces on hikes in and around the park. Visit Rainier has a list of the top 10 wildflower hikes through the area, with a good variety of hikes represented.
