Reviews / Restaurant

Quaint, cozy, WiFi-powered cafes are a dime a dozen in Brooklyn’s trendy neighborhood of Williamsburg, which is why the bubbly, memorable staff members at Black Star Bakery & Café set the coffeehouse apart from the borough’s competition.

Upon entering the single glass door, a whitewashed tile interior is accented with chalkboards displaying the food and beverages du jour. Behind the counter’s glass pane sits an array of pastries for an early-morning meal to go, as well as sandwiches (e.g., grilled cheese croissant, ham and cheese ciabatta, or lox on whole wheat bread) for a mid-day hunger cure. The inventive boxes of macaroons are available in sets of four, seven or 36, or you can buy them a la carte.

As far as coffee is concerned, the baristas make each hot or cold cup to order from small-drip coffees for $2.50 to lattes starting at $3.75. Lactose-sensitive consumers can choose from soy, rice or hemp milks. The small space accommodates just a handful of patrons, but a friendly chat with the cashier will make you feel right at home in your own kitchen.

What major coffee chains lack in terms of personality and congeniality, Black Star fills in the blanks and can seamlessly claim the title as your go-to staple for a supreme cup of Joe.

The Argosaronic Islands Are Calling

The Saronic or Argo Saronic Islands of Greece call travelers to explore its seven small islands and islets brimming with history, natural sites and more.
