Tips / Safety

When it comes to keeping your gear safe, getting some decent travel insurance should be the first thing on your mind. For photographers, this is even more important. While many travelers use their smartphone to take photos and videos, keen photographers are likely to have some expensive specialist equipment.

It is essential you look for insurance policies that have adequate protection for gadgets. In some cases, providers only cover claims up to a certain amount, and camera equipment is easily more expensive than the upper limits of basic policies. It’s worth paying more for insurance that will cover expensive items and allow you to claim for all of the gear you are carrying if it gets lost or stolen.

Another top tip is to go direct to a travel insurer rather than buying add-on insurance from your travel agent or airline. Specialist insurance usually works out far cheaper than add-ons and there will be more options for insuring specific items.

For most photographers, there will be suitable policies available at travel insurers such as Axa and Aviva. However, those with a lot of expensive gear, such as high-end DSLRs or video cameras, may need to go to niche insurers. These companies typically offer packages tailored to professional photographers and cover equipment of higher value. Top choices include e&l, Eversure and Endsleigh.

If you use your camera for work you will need to make sure your policy covers professional use rather than amateur, and it’s also worth checking that coverage extends to the areas you will be visiting. Some companies charge a premium for photographers visiting high-risk areas.

Your quote will depend on your trip and the equipment you own, but as with any kind of insurance you must always read the small print.
