Finding a Foreign Job When You Don’t Speak the Language

Tips / Travel

Acclimating to a new home can be a difficult process, and an inability to speak the native tongue can only add to that stress. Since finding a job is often crucial to financial sustainability, knowing how to approach a foreign job search is important.

Choose The Right Area

Ideally, you want to locate yourself in a country or city that has a high population of bilingual citizens. If this is not a possibility, at the very least you want to choose an area where it is not frowned upon if you don’t speak the language.

Choose The Right Job

While most food-service jobs do not require knowledge of the native language, for those who wish to work in higher-paying careers, options can be limited. One place to start is teaching. Since English is largely an internationally spoken language, there are often job opportunities to be found as an English teacher or teaching assistant. Additionally, English speakers are sought out for positions in tourism- and travel-related industries.

Have The Right Attitude

It may seem unimportant, but approaching a foreign job hunt with the right mindset and composure can go a long way. Becoming part of a different culture is not only about what you know, but what you are willing to learn and do. Being friendly and picking up good non-verbal communication skills often works when trying to breach a language barrier. Being perceptive and learning common phrases can also help.
