Tips / Travel

Whether visiting a new city or looking for events in a familiar place, anyone can experience high culture for a low price. Even renowned institutions offer options for the budget-conscious.

Instead of paying for full-price museum tickets, savvy travelers can enjoy the best for free. Almost all museums have free hours each week. These blocks of time tend to be weekday evenings and are usually sponsored by nearby corporations. Although these free nights do not include special exhibitions, it is still worthwhile to arrange travel plans and bypass general admission fees. Check the museum’s website for specific details.

In addition, students, veterans, National Park members and AARP members often receive reduced admission rates. For example, Bank of America instituted a Museums on Us program, which offers free Bank of America or Merrill Lynch cardholders free admission to select museums on the first full weekend of each month.

Travelers should also consult local papers and college campus newsletters for free or reduced-price concerts and events. Another way for concertgoers to avoid paying full price is to opt for “rush tickets,” instead of purchasing in advance. Many theatres offer deep discounts on unsold or unclaimed tickets just before the show begins. Clearly, this is not the best choice for people on a tight schedule or who have definite plans to see a particular show because they are subject to availability. “Rush tickets” are an excellent choice for the more casual show, but policies vary by theatre and performer — be sure to double check exact rules and regulations.

Budget should not limit travelers (or locals) from experiencing the best museums and performances a city has to offer. With a little research, anyone can enjoy high culture while avoiding the prohibitive cost.
