Tips / Other

If the cold weather doesn’t keep you in, these travel-themed horror movies most definitely will. Here are the six scariest we could find.

The Grudge

Following an American nurse living in Tokyo, The Grudge is a remake of the classic classic from the Japanese-horror genre. Takashi Shimizu, who also wrote the original, again directs.

The Hills Have Eyes

The modern version isn’t bad, even if it’s heavy on the gore, but the original Wes Craven film is considered a cult classic. He and his son went on to write the 2007 sequel of the remake.

The Blair Witch Project

As one of the most successful independent movies of all time, The Blair Witch Project brought the found footage genre to the mainstream, causing many people to wonder if it was real or not.

The Shining

Stanley Kubrick’s beloved adaptation of the Stephen King novel takes place in a snowed-in Colorado hotel. The real life Stanley Hotel, King’s inspiration, is reported as haunted according to multiple guests.

Hostel

If you’re planning on taking a backpacking trip through Europe, you might want to avoid this one. Eli Roth depicts a couple of travelers who find themselves captured by a hostel that lets millionaires torture people. Depending on your tastes, this is a classic of the torture-porn genre popular in the 2000s.

Jaws

It’s not particularly scary by today’s standards, but at the time it resulted in reduced beach attendance and a record number of shark sightings. If you prefer something modern, Stephen Spielberg said Piranha was “the best of the Jaws ripoffs.”
