Tips / Safety

Getting a tattoo is a risky proposition here in the United States, but even more so overseas. In many countries the laws governing body art are lax, so it’s important to be cautious when it comes to getting inked.

Check the Laws

It’s imperative you familiarize yourself with local laws governing tattoos in whatever country you’re looking to get inked in. If there aren’t any or they’re not strict, there’s a good chance your artist won’t be taking the proper precautions to keep you safe.

Inspect the Shop

Not only should you stick to reputable tattoo shops when getting inked rather than back alley artists, you’ll also need to thoroughly inspect the shop you choose. Be sure it’s clean and the artist is sterilizing the equipment and station before agreeing to let them tattoo you.

Be Able to Communicate

Many a misspelled tattoo happened overseas. You’ve got to be able to communicate with your artist in order to ensure you get the tattoo you want, rather than something you’ll regret. Know the local language, pick an artist that speaks English or bring a translator you trust.

Know the Culture

Study the local culture and don’t ask for a tattoo considered disrespectful of the locals or religion of the area. In some countries tattoos are actually illegal, so make sure you’re getting it somewhere it can be covered up and won’t get you in trouble.
