Looking for a beach getaway that’s never crowded and hardly the same ol’ spot your traveling friends have already been to? Cause a little travel envy in your group when you pick one of these little-known Central American beaches.
If you’re looking to truly get away from it all, Santa Catalina is where you want to be. This remote village is a surfer haven, but hasn’t quite made it into the mainstream just yet. The few hotels available are affordable and backpacker-friendly, and most basic services are about an hour’s drive away.
The Honduran Bay Islands offer a unique destination, while still providing you with the creature comforts of luxury living, in case you’re not up for roughing it just yet. Roatán is the most developed of these islands, and is home to a resort and golf course. Keep in mind, though, that, as the most developed, it does host the occasional cruise ship. Stay at another Bay Island to avoid this.
A small town with minimal tourists, Santa Teresa caters to surfers and hippies. Surfing isn’t the only water sport you can find, though. Try the diving, paddleboarding, fishing and more. Plus, the hippie culture means a demand for health and wellness amenities, like yoga classes and spa treatments. Attention to this destination is increasing, though, so plan your trip soon!
You don’t have to be on the ocean to enjoy a spectacular Central American beach. Try out Playa Bancon on Lake Nicaragua. The black volcanic sand, mountainous views and warm water make for a trip you’ll talk about for years.
El Salvador falls low on the popularity scale with most tourists, which means you can enjoy underdeveloped beaches with little hassle and low costs. Depending on where you stay, you’ll encounter backpackers, but you can easily avoid them if you prefer.
