Top 5 / North America

New York City is notoriously expensive, with high-end meals, pricey accommodations and spendy attractions.

But it’s not impossible to have a world-class New York experience and spend little. New York’s top free activities are worth checking out.

Central Park

This one’s a bit of a no-brainer. Central Park is the city’s crown jewel, with more than 800 acres of woods, paths, ball fields, ponds and gardens. Visit famous statues, people watch and glimpse some of the city’s high-end real estate bordering the park.

Governors Island

Take the free ferry ride to the 172-acre island, opened to the public only recently, in 2003. Stroll the 2.2-mile path, enjoy a picnic and explore military sites like Admiral’s House and the ghost town at Nolan Park.

The High Line

The impressive elevated rail line has been converted to a park, with river and city views and interesting gardens and architecture

Kayaking

The boats are free at the public boathouses like Downtown Boathouse and Long Island Community Boathouse.

Staten Island Ferry

Designed for commuters but one of the best experiences in the city, the Staten Island Ferry crosses the New York Harbor. You can’t beat the views of the city and the Statue of Liberty.
