Farm to Shaker Trends

Trends / Food & Drink

The trend for all things organic only increases. Knowing where your food comes from and how it was processed are the primary concerns for the responsible consumer. This extends to drinking trends as well and, according to the National Restaurant Association, seeing a farm-to-shaker trend in 2018 will be another direction in which the food and drink industry moves.

This trend means fresher, better-quality mixed drinks, which is not a bad thing. In the past, sickly sweet mixed drinks, even at high-end bars, have been a standard on some level. Of course, if you are a classic cocktail connoisseur and always gravitate toward martinis or whiskey sodas, you did not have much to worry about, but anyone who enjoyed something on the sweeter side was probably served a decent amount of corn syrup with that gimlet. The trend moves away from this and toward an approach to natural ingredients. Even club sodas and tonic waters are going upscale with brands like Fever-Tree. Organic simple syrups and fresh juices are invested in to create more creative cocktails like watermelon-ginger Aperol spritzers.

You can start at home by perfecting your own organic simple syrup with an easy recipe. Once you have this technique down, adding fresh juice to your favorite alcohol provides the perfect farm-to-shaker refreshment.
