When a natural disaster strikes, it’s natural to feel the need to help out, especially if you are near the affected areas. Countless amounts of people decide to contact various organizations in an effort to try to volunteer onsite. Some people even feel the urgent need to hop in their vehicles and get there as soon as possible! It’s important to keep in mind, however, volunteers needed in a specific area need to be aware of the various factors that can hinder and help in a disaster situation.

In many disaster situations, there are no longer basic services. There may not be any food, shelter, service or electricity to spare for volunteers, so one has to be aware and ready for such a situation.

Additionally, some disaster situations require a certain level of training and preparedness. In disaster situations, volunteers will no doubt undergo some incredibly stressful situations. Disaster victims could potentially be desperate, stressed and potentially upset. As a trained volunteer affiliated with a certain organization, one would be able to provide more effective relief than a volunteer that isn’t.

If planning on traveling to a foreign country, it’s important to keep in mind volunteers will need the proper documentation and visas necessary to enter that country. One cannot simply show up at the border, announcing you are there to help.

Volunteers also need to be aware of situational assessments, incident management and chain of command in a certain disaster situation. These skills are essential in ensuring rescue and relief efforts go to the places that need it the most and that resources get to where they are needed as quickly as possible.

An easy way to volunteer without filling any of these necessary requirements is to donate. But if you want to help with a disaster beyond financial donations, start thinking about ways to get trained and affiliated with the right organizations. Some great places to get started include the American Red Cross, VolunteerMatch and Idealist.

Good luck in your humanitarian endeavors!
