Maputo is a bustling little city with old-world style architecture and thousands of merchants around every corner trying to sell wares. It also has a wonderful culture full of friendly locals, making it a great daytrip when you’re in Mozambique. Luckily, a day here is also incredibly affordable.
Start with breakfast at Chez Fred, a quaint little French café that serves delicious European treats that won’t break the bank. You can sample excellent coffee or vegetarian friendly breads and eggs for less than $10.
Next make your way over to the famous Samora Machel statue to pose for pictures and learn a little history. It’s right near the Tunduro Gardens and the Iron House, all free to explore.
From there you might want to check out Maputo’s vibrant fish market just to get a glimpse of how the locals go about their daily lives. You can even grab a quick snack before lunch here for less than $5.
When you’re ready for a real meal, head to Graciana for authentic African food. The fried cassava sticks and matapa are both great options and will run less than $15.
In the afternoon, feel free to stroll over to the Maputo Central Station for some great architecture and to chat with locals at the Worker’s Square. Next, check out the Natural History Museum to learn more about the history of the region. Admission is free.
Finally, finish off with a meal at Dhow. This wonderful Mediterranean restaurant serves some of the most delicious food in Maputo and the views are the greatest in the city. A meal here will cost around $20.
