Iceland’s tourism industry shows no sign of slowing down: Thousands of people are flocking to the North Atlantic island nation to witness its natural beauty in person, from glacier walking to breathtaking waterfalls to the elusive Northern Lights. While the capital of Reykjavik serves as the entry point for most visitors, it’s worth exploring other areas of the largely untouched country, including the coastal town of Akureyri, situated on Iceland’s northern edge.

Charge your devices (and your energy level) for a day of sightseeing at Te & Kaffi where the WiFi connection is as strong as the espresso.

Located at the base of a fjord, the majority of sights and attractions revolve around the outdoors. Local companies sponsor daytrips that include rafting, tubing, whale watching, hiking or simply floating along the peaceful waters with the mountains as the backdrop. Companies like Saga and Star Travel offer these excursions but the prices can be steep.

For a more affordable visit, dive into the local history by climbing 112 steps to Akureyrarkirkja, the central church that provides stunning views of the surroundings. Get in touch with nature at the Arctic Botanical Gardens where the frigid climate’s variety of plants and colorful flowers may surprise you.

Iceland is not the ideal budget destination, but if you’re willing to stretch your króna, consider a dinner at Kaffi Ilmur, an Akureryi institution in one of the oldest buildings in town with entrees starting at $20. Those sticking to a budget should opt for a burger and fries at DJ Grill. Although the latter is not the most authentic experience, you’ll save more money for excursions.
