Under $100 / North America

The historic town of Petersburg is just 25 miles south of the state’s capital city of Richmond, so the famous Virginian site of pivotal moments in the nation’s history warrants a visit. The budget-friendly city is prime for lovers of nature, history and all things small town.

Start the day with a caffeine boost at Demolition Coffee on East Bank Street, where a small drip coffee costs less than $2 and specialty coffees like lattes start at $3.50. Waffles and egg dishes are also available for less than $8.

History buffs should head straight to the main attraction: Petersburg National Battlefield Park, where the longest battle of the Civil War took place in 1864 and1865. Book a free tour and witness reenactments of the nine-month struggle between the North and the South that eventually led to Lee’s surrender to General Grant and the North. Caravan tours last 75 minutes and walking tours take 45 minutes to one hour. It´s easy to spend hours wandering the battlefield’s grounds as the scenery in itself is breathtaking.

Another option for those eager to learn more about Virginia’s role in the Civil War is Pamplin Historical Park. Four historic buildings and four museums make up the park where reenactments and tours inform visitors of life before, during and after the war.

After brushing up on everything there is to know about the Civil War, relax with a cold brew at Trapezium Brewing Company on Third Street. Four signature brews are available to sample and purchase, including the Lucky 75 Lemon Honey Ginger Ale.

For dinner, head to Jimmy’s Grille where comfort food reigns supreme like chicken and waffles, barbecue pork platters and happy hour from 5 to 6 p.m. All dinner entrees are less than $11.
