Under $100 / North America

If you’re visiting New England and want to see cities typically outside of the spotlight, Hartford, Conn., will let you do so for cheap.

Hartford is named after Hartford, England. Puritans settled the city in June 1636. The city’s illustrious history is evident in the city to this day.

Kick off your morning with a big breakfast from Ashley’s Restaurant at 221 Main St. For just $6.25, you can get the aptly named Big Breakfast. Two pancakes or pieces of French toast, two pieces of bacon, two portions of sausage, a helping of home fries and coffee will help get the day going in the right direction.

After breakfast, you have a morning of tours and museums waiting for you.

Take a trek to 385 Farmington Ave., for a tour and museum of the Mark Twain House and Museum. A ticket for the guided tour costs $20 for adults and takes visitors throughout the historic house. If touring isn’t really your thing, but you still want to visit the house, museum entries can be purchased for $6.

After seeing the Mark Twain House, it is time to take a trip over to the Wadsworth Atheneum. The Atheneum is the oldest continuously-operated public museum in the United States. Admission to the museum only costs $15 for an adult. The museum’s total collection boasts more than 50,000 works of art.

Take a break from the museums with a lunch trip to the Church and Main Delicatessen at 20 Church St. The deli’s robust menu offers a taste of Hartford in a number of different packages, including pizza, pasta, sandwiches and more. You can get any salad, sandwich or grinder on the menu for less than $10.

After lunch, it is time to explore one of Hartford’s jewels. Bushnell Park offers years of history, sights and even a carousel for kids.

The park is an arboretum, meaning some rare and native trees call the park home. You can grab a brochure from the women’s voters desk to guide you through the tree walk for free. The Connecticut state capital is within walking distance of the park, and a historic carousel, originally built in 1914, is operational for kids. The park is home to a number of statues, war memorials and fountains as well.

Finish your day by grabbing dinner at Angelina’s Pizza. This local pizzeria will allow you to get a taste. If pizza isn’t your thing, the eatery also has a number of grinders $8.50–9.
