Oranjestad is the capital of Aruba. When visiting the small island, you’ll fly into the one true city in the destination before heading to your hotel or resort. When you’re ready to take a break from the beach and explore the island’s other offerings, though, you’ll want to head back into Oranjestad for shopping, attractions and nightlife.
Start with a patio breakfast at The Dutch Pancakehouse. You’ll find more than 75 varieties of both sweet and savory options, all on a budget.
The two most popular museums on the island are the Aruba Aloe Museum and the National Archaeological Museum of Aruba. Almost two centuries ago, aloe vera plants were introduced to the island, where it was quickly discovered the climate was perfect for growing potent strains of the plant, leading to Aruba’s status as the world’s largest aloe exporter. The island is proud of this piece of their past, and you’ll find many products boasting authentic Aruban aloe. The National Archaeological Museum follows the island’s history from prehistoric time forward.
Enjoy high-end shopping at Renaissance Mall, where you can browse the latest from Prada, Louis Vuitton, Cartier and more. Inside the mall, you’ll also discover access to a casino and other entertainment.
Grab lunch or dinner at the West Deck for a casual, fun atmosphere with views of the water. You’ll find a menu filled with seafood and a few Dutch influences. A meal can be made from the impressive array of appetizers, or you can order shrimp, fish cakes and other items by the dozen to share. Before drinks, you can easily enjoy dinner for less than $20.
