Under $100 / Europe

Start your day in Brussels with a healthy helping of waffles — Belgian waffles, that is. The Waffle Factory Bruxelles is right within walking distance of all the best scenic spots in town, and is pretty affordable. You can chow down on two or three of their sweet or savory options for just a few euro apiece.

Since you’re already in the neighborhood, visit some of the best sites. The Manneken Pis, the famed tiny statue, is just a few blocks away, and, in the opposite direction, is the Grand Place, one of the most famous city squares in all of Europe. While you walk, you’ll want to stop plenty of times for photos, and also pop into the many shops selling traditional Belgian items, from chocolate to lace.

Take a bit of a longer walk to the Mont des Arts for an unbeatable view of the city. The landscaped area is nearby many museums and other attractions, but it’s also just a short walk from the Royal Palace of Brussels. While the palace is only open select summer dates for tours, it’s still worth a visit in the off-season to view the opulent exterior.

Once you’ve worked up your appetite again, satisfy your sweet tooth with a trip to the Chocolate Museum of Brussels. Situated in a beautiful home built in 1697, the museum is host to various exhibits on the history of chocolate. Don’t worry — there’ll be plenty of time to taste, as well! You can also check out chocolate-making demonstrations while you’re there. Admission is affordable, at only €6.

For dinner, try Restaurant ’T Kelderke, located right in Grand Place and also boasting a 17th-century exterior. Try regional delicacies, such as horse steak or veal kidneys, or opt for a less adventurous culinary option and go with something a little more familiar, such as the chicken. The traditional stoemp meets in the middle, giving you a new dining experience with familiar flavors; stoemp is simply a Belgian potato dish including various vegetables and herbs. The large majority of menu items are less than €20.
