Under $100 / Europe

Finland’s capital and largest city is also a major cultural hub and one of the most important in northern Europe.

Situated on the shore of the Gulf of Finland, Helsinki is a beautiful city boasting numerous museums, countless restaurants and pubs, and beautiful outdoor spaces that can all be enjoyed on a budget.

For some free cultural experiences, visit Senate Square, the focal point of the city and reason for its nickname The White City of the North. The Government Palace, the main building of Helsinki University and the large cathedral, built in 1852, surround the square.

The city is also home to several notable Art Nouveau buildings and residences designed in the early 20th century, influenced by The Kalevala, a popular theme in the national romantic art of that era. You can also witness the Art Nouveau style in the architectural masterpiece that is the Helsinki Central railway station.

Rautatientori, or Railway Square, is home to the Ateneum Art Museum, the Helsinki Central Railway Station and the Finnish National Theatre. Visit the impressive Ateneum or the Finnish National Theatre for around $17.

The largest historical museum in Helsinki is the National Museum of Finland, home to a vast collection from prehistoric times to the 21st century. The museum itself is a beautiful Romantic-era, Neo-Medieval castle, and you can visit for only around $10.

The city also offers plenty of free museums, including The Helsinki City Museum, which introduces visitors to the city’s 500-year history and the Sinebrychoff Art Museum, free the first Wednesday of every month.

For a satisfying, inexpensive meal, grab a bite at Café Bar 9 or BLINIt for affordable, authentic and delicious Russian and Eastern European food. As the weather in Finland can get chilly, warm up with a hearty bowl of soup at Soppakeittio for less than $10, or grab some fresh, vegan fast food at Jano, an old kiosk building located in a peaceful park that also serves great coffee, tea and vegan ice cream.

The best way to get around Helsinki is by tram. The Tram 2 is known as the sightseeing tram, a great way to see the city for cheap. Route 4 is perfect for those interested in architecture and route 6 for those interested in art and design. Purchase a day ticket, which can be used on the bus, tram or train, for only $9. There are plenty of taxis as well, which can be pricier during high-traffic times.
