Under $100: Isla Holbox, Mexico

Isla Holbox is perfect for a relaxing few days away from the big hotels of Cancun. Here’s how you can see the best of the island on a budget.

Get your day off to a good start with breakfast at Et Voila, a French café that serves up a variety of bargain breakfasts for just $5. Choose from the American, Mexican or Continental breakfasts; the latter comes with a home-baked croissant.

Hire a bike from Bikes Holbox for $9 for the day and head out of town to the west until you hit Punta Cocos, where you can sometimes see flamboyances of flamingos. Relax on the deserted beach and then head back into town for lunch at Café Colibri, where the coconut prawns come highly recommended ($14 with a drink).

In the afternoon, cycle off east until you hit the river that splits the island. Check out the impressive birdlife, and take a walk out onto the two-mile-long sandbank at low tide. You might even see more flamingos.

Buy a beer ($1) and watch the sun go down from the pier before dinner at Taco Queto ($4). From here you can keep an eye on Hot Corner, the busiest bar in town, and head over when things start to get lively. Beers cost around $2.50 and tequila is $4 per shot.
