The Italian region of Tuscany is known for its acres of vineyards, romantic rolling hills and high-achieving architecture, particularly in the tourist-heavy town of Pisa. But road trippers through this saturated college town can rest assured there is more to do and see than the town’s namesake leaning tower.
To access the top of the leaning tower, tickets must be purchased and scheduled in advance, and the prices can range $22–34 depending on the time of day you schedule your visit. Climb the 294 steps and marvel in views of the city and the Piazza del Miracoli below. Those who choose not to climb to the top can still walk around the outside of the tower and snap free photographs from all angles.
Just next to the tower is the cathedral complex with a stunning church and a separate baptistery. Some towers also include entry to these structures, but it’s best to confirm this before purchasing. The expansive grounds that surround these buildings are perfectly manicured green lawns where sun bathers lounge beneath the afternoon’s rays.
Head in to the small town to get a glimpse of Pisa without the tower, including a stop at l’Ostellino for a taste of real Italian street food. Grab a panini to go and enjoy the Italian sandwich under the Tuscan sun.
For a more formal, sit-down meal, visit charming Il Peperoncino, a small establishment serving classics like pizza, pasta, vino and tiramisu.
