Under $100 / Europe

Spain’s Atlantic coast is much smaller than the Mediterranean coast on the other side of the country, but the cities on the water’s edge should not be discounted despite the chilly ocean breezes, higher propensity for rainy days compared with the rest of Spain and distance from some of Spain’s larger, more popular cities. One such town that warrants a visit is the Galician fishing/port city of Vigo.

Begin your day in the ancient Roman city at Terrae, an organic coffee shop on Rua Venezuela that serves coffee, tea, pastries and vegan egg dishes like omelettes.

Properly fueled, hit the hiking trail up to Parque Monte del Castro where a castle sits atop the city as sweeping views of the port and distant islands spread out before you.

Speaking of the Islas Cies, book a round-trip ferry ride for €10 and visit the small islands off the coast of Vigo. Spread out a blanket and enjoy a picnic on the white-sand beaches while admiring the turquoise waters, mimicking a tropical paradise.

Upon returning from the islands, stroll through the pedestrian-friendly Mercado da Pedra to peruse fresh oysters and other seafood, or pop into the Iglesia Santa Maria with an impressive interior that contrasts with its rather plain exterior.

As dinner time approaches, book a table at the Othilio Bar for a few bottles of local wine and some of the freshest and most innovative seafood dishes in the city served tapas style, like red tuna tartare with wasabi, or crispy prawns with a mussels-inspired dip.
