Like most major world cities, Paris faces a daily conundrum that causes headaches for the residents who drive: traffic. Although the city’s public transportation system keeps it well connected and Parisians are incredibly eco-friendly as many walk or bike to get around the 20 districts of France’s capital, the city is still jammed with traffic, especially during rush hour. In an attempt to solve this growing problem, Paris officials are looking to the skies for a solution.
Within the next five years, Paris officials plan to construct and operate suspended cable cars that will transport as many as 5,000 passengers per hour into and out of the city limits. The incredibly efficient and environmentally friendly idea trumps the plan for any further ground construction such as trams or bus routes, which will only create more congestion.
The city plans to submit three proposals by the end of 2017 that will request permission to build suspended cable cars in the southern suburbs of Paris and elsewhere along the outskirts of the city. Although it may take time for the plan to get off the ground (literally), city officials hope it will cut the commute time for thousands of people who travel into the city each day for work.
