Food & Drink

Just because you’re “roughing it” while camping, doesn’t mean you have to restrict yourself to canned beans and stale granola bars. Campfire cooking can be a foodie-friendly experience.

Plan ahead so you bring as few ingredients as possible. Foods like couscous can do double duty as breakfast and dinner staples. Bring plenty of tin foil to roast vegetables — yams, potatoes, corn and squash. Popcorn is another fun campfire staple to add to your camping menu.

Instead of carrying a container of oil, bring ghee (clarified butter) as it adds flavor and does not need to be refrigerated. Don’t skimp on the spices — a little sea salt, herbs and pepper can take a meal from bland to dinner-worthy. Spices are lighter to transport than sauces and pack just as much of a punch.

S’mores are standard fare, but expand your palate beyond roasted marshmallows and try making apple or berry crisp in a tinfoil packet. For a lighter dessert, roast peaches, plums or plantains directly on the grill.

Best of all, these tips can transfer from campfire to fire pit or open-flame grill. Enjoy a season of outdoor cooking!
