Spud Point Crab Company on California’s rugged Pacific coastline in Bodega Bay does not look like more than an unassuming fishermen’s café, but this dining venue has been serving world-famous clam chowder to patrons from across the globe for more than a decade. The family-owned business makes delicious seafood specialties with fresh crab and wild king salmon caught by owner Tony Anello and his Mark’s boats.

After a relatively short drive from Santa Rosa and along the coastline, we found this unique 360-square-foot shop tucked away in beautiful Bodega Bay across the street from Spud Point Marina. The venue prides itself on being a truly old-style Fishermen’s Wharf operation, cooking the same seafood owner Tony and his son catch. Owner Carol Anello and daughters Lisa and Gina run in the store and prepare the day’s catch by putting live crab right into the larger cookers right outside the shop.

Still stuck on East Coast time, we ordered lunch fairly early, about an hour or so after the shop opened at 9 a.m. We ordered two piping hot bowls of clam chowder as well as a fresh crab sandwich to share and enjoyed our meals on clean picnic tables outside with views of the boats and bay.

The white chowder was truly delicious, packed with big pieces of clams and potatoes in a hearty, filling broth. The crab sandwich was just as good, with fresh lumps of crab on a lightly toasted roll. The meal hit the spot and gave us the energy we needed to keep up with our action-packed day exploring Sonoma County’s tourist trail.
