Since 1993, Abeno has been offering Japanese pancakes known as okonomi-yaki to a loyal clientele of Londoners.
Hidden just off New Oxford Street in Holborn, Abeno doesn’t look like much from outside. But what it lacks in exterior decor in makes up for inside.
When most people think of Japanese food it is the now ubiquitous sushi which springs to mind, or perhaps katsu curry for the more curious. It’s about time the savory okonomi-yaki pancakes get the attention they deserve, and Abeno is the best place in London to try them.
Abeno’s status as a well-kept secret means most first-time diners are recommended, as I was, by a Japanese resident of London. Once you’re inside, take a seat at one of the tables arranged around a grill.
It’s on this grill one of the friendly staff will cook your okonomi-yaki in front of your eyes, adding noodles, egg and your choice of ingredients to the hot plate before leaving it to steam under a lid.
I ordered a Tokyo Mix, which came with prawn, pork belly and beef cooked with the signature house sauce. Alongside a portion of udon noodles, the entire meal was delicious and there are a number of imported Japanese beers such as Asahi, Sapporo and Kirin Ichiban to choose from.
If you want to experience a different part of Japanese cuisine, Abeno is highly recommended for the standard of its food and service. The bill came to $75 for two people with drinks.
