Being an over-packer often has just one advantage. You have enough clothes, supplies and accessories for every need you encounter on your travels. However, you don’t have to pack the whole kitchen sink to be prepared. If you struggle with over-packing, here are a few simple ways to become a compact, more minimalistic packer.
Live out of a suitcase for a week before your trip
If you are headed on a big trip, pack your bag a week early. In that week before your adventure, try living out of your suitcase for a week. It will quickly become apparent what you need and don’t need. Over-packers often bemoan items they packed, but never wore. A test run will eliminate all unnecessary items you won’t end up using.
Set your own baggage restrictions
Over-packers often begin with a sizeable foundation. If you have a giant suitcase or suitcases, you are going to over-pack. Travelers should set a limit with their baggage size, committing to only bring that one bag. You should never pack more bags than you have hands.
Utilize packing aids
If you can’t seem to shake your over-packing ways, packing aids might help you condense all that you want to pack into neat little cubes. Packing cubes not only help you maintain some semblance of organization on your travels, but they can also force the over-packer to only pack items that fit into packing tools.
Make a list and stick to it
The over-packer often forgets to make a list of what they actually need. If you are looking to slim down your luggage load, make a list before you begin packing. By sticking to the amounts listed for each item, you will avoid tossing in too many pairs of pants you simply don’t need.
