Providence, R.I., the third-largest city in New England behind Boston and Worcester, is one of those places where the density of beautiful, historical architecture is incredible. It’s a vibrant area with universities, cultural events, museums and organizations that make it interesting.
Whether living in Providence or passing through, the city doesn’t have to break the bank. There’s plenty of ways to spend less than $100.
Begin your day with brunch at Cook and Brown Public House. Don’t skip the morning cocktail here, as it’s nationally recognized bar program offers inventive takes on brunch drinks including six different types of Bloody Mary’s and sophisticated spins on mimosas. The food, including a waffle ice cream sandwich with bacon ice cream for $6; the vegetable hash with greens, horseradish crème fraiche and poached eggs for $10; or the pork belly benedict with home fries for $13, is just as compelling.
After breakfast, head to The Botanical Center at Roger Williams Park, which includes nearly 12,000 square feet of beautifully maintained indoor and outdoor gardens. It’s the largest public indoor display garden in New England and one of the top city attractions. The park is home to two greenhouses, the Conservatory and the Mediterranean Room, that house more than 150 species and cultivations of plants. General admission is $5.
Next, head to the John Brown House for a tour. The house was built in 1788 by merchant, patriot, politician and slave trader John Brown. He and his family were some of the wealthiest and most influential people in the colonies and in the United States. The Browns are the namesake of Brown University. Walk through his mansion and experience life at the end of the 18th century. Guests can choose a guided tour or a self-guided audio tour. Admission is $10 for adults, $8 for seniors and students, and $6 for children seven–17. On Thursday evenings in the summer, pack a picnic and dine on the lawn while listening to Concerts Under the Elms.
If you’re in town on a Saturday, spend the rest of the afternoon at the Hope Street Farmers Market listening to live music, perusing the wares of local artisans and buying produce, meat, cheese, seafood and specialty products. When you’re hungry, grab lunch from a food truck. The market is open May–October on Saturdays, 9 a.m.–1 p.m., and Wednesdays, 3–6 p.m.
