My husband and I recently dined at Alpen Rose in Philadelphia. We made last-minute dinner plans with another couple. It was the first time visiting the restaurant for all of us, and we were excited to experience the steakhouse.
When we arrived, the door was locked. We rang the bell and suddenly a small, eye-level door opened to reveal the hostess. We laughed, as we did not expect this greeting! We gave our name and she opened the regular door to let us in. The restaurant gives off a sophisticated and cozy ambiance with its wood paneling, large bookshelves, crystal chandeliers and booths with leather cushions.

Our friendly waiter came by shortly after we were seated to go over the menu and offer recommendations. My husband and our friends started with cocktails and I opted for a glass of Sauvignon Blanc. The menu boasts elevated steakhouse classics. We decided to share a couple appetizers and sides, and pick our own entrées. We knew we wanted to try the oysters Rockefeller and our waiter also recommended a hot scallop appetizer. As our sides, we selected the creamed spinach, roasted forest mushrooms and mac & cheese. I went with a classic eight-ounce filet mignon with roasted garlic and pickled shallots as my entrée.
The seafood appetizers arrived first and were just as delicious as we hoped. I tried oysters Rockefeller for the first time in New Orleans at the restaurant where they originated and was disappointed. Alpen Rose’s version was lighter and the spinach and breadcrumbs were perfectly seasoned and cooked. After our appetizers, we ordered a bottle of red wine to accompany our entrées. The sides and our entrées arrived next and we dove in. My steak was perfect and I devoured every bite. The creamed spinach, mushrooms and mac & cheese paired well together and completed the steakhouse dinner experience. My husband and friends also cleaned their plates.
A true steakhouse meal isn’t complete without dessert. We decided to share two: banana cream pie and baked Alaska. The baked Alaska was a showstopper, of course, with the meringue browned tableside.
The meal was wonderful from start to finish, with incredible food, excellent service and great company. I would recommend Alpen Rose to anyone looking for a cozy steakhouse dinner in Philadelphia.
