It’s the beginning of the year and love is in the air — it’s enough to make some people sick. Are you the type who can’t stand Valentine’s Day and would rather hop a flight to someplace less lovey-dovey during the season? Check these places out.

Japan

Japanese culture has always been a little adverse to public displays of affection. While you might find people celebrate the holiday here, they do it mostly behind closed doors. Watching two young lovers make out across from you at your favorite restaurant won’t happen here.

Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia is a Muslim-majority country and, as such, PDA is typically outlawed. In many cities around the country they’ve gone so far as to ban Valentine’s Day altogether. So why not spend the day exploring beautiful historical sites like Madain Saleh without the worry of someone handing you roses?

Las Vegas

If you’d rather stay a little closer to home, there’s always Las Vegas. The City of Sin might have a reputation among those looking to get hitched, but those are rarely the result of actual romance. Instead, the bright lights and sex appeal make it less a destination for Valentine’s Day and more a dirty bachelor party. You might even win a little money while you’re at it.

Bangkok

Bangkok has always had something of a reputation perfect for anyone avoiding love. Extremely friendly locals looking for your money will certainly hit on you, depending on where you go, but you’re unlikely to be asked on an actual date. Instead, spend Valentine’s Day exploring Wat Arun or the Temple of the Emerald Buddha.

Patagonia

Finally, if you really want to avoid Valentine’s Day you should head south to Patagonia. The entire region is a rugged wonderland of outdoor adventure, with nary a cheesy heart-shaped chocolate in sight. Avoid Valentine’s Day and the corny marketing companies by getting away from civilization entirely, so you can get closer to your inner self.
