Choosing the perfect backpack to take on a backpacking trip can be as difficult as deciding where to stop and stay on a weeks- or months-long journey. Just a few of the features to consider include weight, size, storage capabilities and whether the bag will be easy to check onto a plane versus cramming into an overhead bin. Regardless of whether you choose large or small, light or heavy, functionality is the most important thing to consider when choosing a long-haul backpack, and the Rise Pro pack from Deuter meets all the desirable requirements.

Coming in at a cool $130 (per Amazon.com), the price for the Rise Pro is a bit steep, but considering the price tags for larger luggage, it’s a steal. The backpack weighs in at 1.3 pounds, and measures 26 inches by 16 inches, with an empty width of 6 inches.

The U-frame back features an opening panel so the wearer can access the interior contents without taking off and opening the entire backpack. The top compartment’s height can be adjusted for increased storage or flattened down to save space. The back panel also features flexible/removable Vari Flex wings to secure the bag in place for comfort.

Skiers and snowboarders will find particular use in the attachment straps for snow sport equipment, and hikers can delight in the pole-attachment features. Stuck without a washing machine for a few days? Store your dirty laundry in a separate, breathable compartment. Although the backpack is marketed toward female travelers, all travelers can benefit from the bag’s features and durability.
