Health & Wellness

It can be difficult to stay in shape while traveling. You’re outside of your normal routine, your schedule is likely packed and you may even be staying in hostels without much privacy. However, that doesn’t mean you have to completely forgo working out. Give these workouts a try the next time you’re away from home and the gym. All you need is yourself and a small amount of space.

If you’re really looking to up the intensity, perform these workouts one after the other in a HIIT (high intensity interval training) format. HIIT can be achieved by alternating periods of intense work with a short rest period. Fifty seconds of work, followed by 10 seconds of rest, is one easy way to keep track of the time.

Push-ups

This upper body move will work your arms and chest, and can be made easier or more difficult depending on your level of fitness. Need to make it easier? Lower your knees to the ground. Want some extra burn? Try raising one leg off of the ground and alternate legs. Just remember to go low!

Squat Jumps

Exercise your legs and your lungs with this take on a traditional squat. Simply squat down and then explode back up, jumping into the air.

Jumping Jacks

Another tried-and-true cardio move to get that heart rate up, try to go as fast as you can, especially if you’re working this one into your HIIT routine.

Burpees

Ahh, burpees. They’re so hard, but so effective. Start off standing and then lower to a squat. Put your hands out in front of you and then kick your feet back so that you’re in a push-up position. Do one push-up, and then hop your legs back toward your hands. Stand up and then jump up as high as you can. That’s one rep!

Mountain Climbers

Start off in a push-up position, making sure your legs are lined up with the rest of your body. To start, bend one knee and bring it to the hand on the same side. Return the leg to the original position, and then repeat the move on the opposite side. It should look like you’re climbing a mountain, hence the name. Try to move fast to get the greatest benefit from this full-body move.
