The Cassiar Cannery hovers on the fog-shrouded banks of the Skeena River, near its mouth in northern British Columbia. In its heyday, the salmon cannery was one of 12 operating in the area in the early 1900s. It employed thousands of people to pack cans of salmon for shipping all over the world and was the longest continually operating cannery on the west coast of Canada.
Now, the 122-year-old cannery has been converted into a hotel. The original cannery building and its massive dock are no longer in use, but the former homes of the cannery managers have been restored and are available for rent by the night. The charming, pastel-hued homes face the waterfront, with its dramatic tides and mountain views.
Each house is beautifully outfitted and each one sports a different layout. There are multiple bedrooms available, so this is a great place for families or a group of friends. Kitchens and living areas make these houses self-contained. There are also ample porches that face the water and the views.
The cannery is in various states of disrepair, making for fascinating exploration — within the areas deemed safe by the staff. It’s also the perfect jumping off point for fishing and visiting other historic and cultural sites in the area.
