March marks the celebration of Women’s History Month in the United States. The event commemorates and encourages the study, observance and celebration of the role of women in American history.

The national celebration was first held in 1982 as Women’s History Week. Non-profit organization National Women’s History Project petitioned for the week to be expanded to a full month. Congress designated the first Women’s History month in March 1987. Additional resolutions were passed over the following years to ensure each March be reserved for Women’s History Month. The National Gallery of Art, Library of Congress, Smithsonian Institute, National Archives, United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, National Park Service and National Endowment for the Humanities sponsor the event. The National Women’s History Project continues to provide resources for celebrating women’s place in American history.

Museums around the country host events, special exhibits and collections to honor the observance. A list of resources are available on the Women’s History Month website. Audio and video materials are also available.
