Tips / Travel

Having no immediate travel plans can be both uncomfortable and exciting for frequent globetrotters — after all, you have the entire world to choose from. Now the challenging part: deciding where to go. Here are some ways to help narrow down your next destination.

Take advantage of the power of social media. Sure, social media can be frustrating, especially when it comes to our current political landscape, but let’s not forget what it does best: shares personal opinions.

If you’re not sure where you want to go, try searching #travel or specific geotags on Instagram, and scroll through the photos until something catches your eye. You’ll not only get a feel for the general destination you want to visit but some great local spots to visit in those places as well. Facebook’s “ask for recommendations” is also a great tool.

Think about experiences important to you. Maybe you’re an art or history lover and want to expand your knowledge (we recommend Eastern Europe), or you’re thinking of a trip focused on wine (Italy, Portugal, Spain, etc.). If you’re looking for outdoor adventures, your options could include Canada, Iceland or the Swiss Alps. Consider the types of experiences you enjoy the most, and make your decision that way.

Let the food make the call. For many, food is one of the important factors in deciding where to travel. Think about your favorite food, and head to its authentic source. Pasta really is wonderful in Italy, and we can ensure the best Pad Thai really is in Thailand.

Consider your budget. Perhaps a tour of world capitals may not be in your budget at the moment, but there are several amazing smaller cities, towns and villages around the world worth visiting. Stay within your means to make the most out of a destination, but if you really want to visit a particular place, there’s always a way to make it happen.

Let the fates (and apps) decide. Still having trouble putting a pin in the map? Let the universe decide. There are several great flight-booking apps and websites posting last-minute flight deals if you’re okay with spontaneity. For those with no particular destination in mind, this is a great way to go, as it’ll decide for you and save you some money.
